Gian Lorenzo Bernini was twenty-three years old when he finished this. The abduction of Proserpina, dragged into the underworld by Pluto, her fingertips pressing into his stone-hard hand in a way that should not be possible in marble, is a technical miracle and a mythological gut-punch. One of the most complex pieces in the collection.
